We were like a network of passenger pigeons, passing correspondence amongst ourselves, but never with a sense of group consensus, never knowing what the others were doing exactly.

Standing for the first time in a bar in Lausanne, as everyone else was standing on the street in front of it, it suddenly occurred to me that the difference from the bars I am more used to frequenting is, in fact, that they prompt you to sit down. Talking in that sense presupposes a group conversation, and group dynamics are contained by, and represented in, the table. In the standing up bar I was encouraged to move around, and I talked to five different people exclusively in less than an hour. As it looked, others were doing the same.
The road from acquaintance to collegiality or even to friendship can be long or not very long at all; but it usually starts with a question like "Where have you come from?" As in, "What brings you here?" In any case, I have learned that both are not real questions, but in fact are invitations to conversation. However, by dropping the general place specific they can be reformulated back into a question like "Where are you coming from?" or "What do you think you are doing?"
Ideas can come from places or people, but they can also just be in the air. I think things usually move around until one thing gets stuck on something and someone decides it makes sense.
When you get two people in one room they might or might not get into a conversation, but from the perspective of someone peeping in through the window (or so the saying goes) these people are going to relate in more ways than not. Its easy to forget that people can turn into objects as quickly as an object can make you a proposition.
When I'm getting into an elevator with other people, I sometimes wonder if in case of a jam, will I get along with these people? Or in terms of survival: who will eat who? Then, if indeed I still want to stay alive, what might the guy next to me taste like?.
The matter of what's following what or who's following who can come in here...
Withholding or fictifying information at an early stage of a relationship, like a biographical insert, figures as a kind of divergent or space filler that might just buy enough time on the course up to the would-be yacht, penthouse, hotel-suit come tent-thing. But of course when it's obvious, it's as obvious as the motives the lie was attempting to cover.
Once lonely in Paris in the 90's, I thought to take my chances on the last screening at the Cinematek. Thinking best case scenario I just might get along with someone, I got a ticket somewhere in the middle to whatever was playing next. The film was Tango in Paris and the seats were cubed into individual viewing booths.

Les relations... LES RE-LA-TI-ON-SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. J'en ai eu et j'en ai pas mal.

Les relations c'est euh... un grand filet de pêche. Tu vois l'idée. Un filet de pêche sans miracle, plus ou moins distendu, qui se complique avec le temps. Ou pas. Dans le filet il y a des personnes. Ou plutôt, non... les personnes sont les mailles du filet. Ce sont par exemple : les amantes (je n'en ai vraiment pas eu beaucoup du tout) les amants (...), les épouses (je n'en ai pas encore), les époux (j'en ai un), les amies, les amis, les étudiants, les étudiantes, les ennemis, les ennemies, les assistantes, les assistants, les modèles, les muses (j'ai eu et j'ai encore beaucoup de tout cela). Beaucoup de ces mailles / personnes se connaissent et ont des relations entre elles. Le filet se déplace au gré des remous, il change de forme selon les lieux, les contextes, il s'adapte. Tu le vois, le filet qui change de forme, souplement, comme une méduse (en anglais : jelly fish) ? Et dans le filet il y a des objets. Des objets sont pris dans le filet.

Bon, j'admets, le coup du filet c'est un peu pizzeria comme métaphore. Je passe beaucoup de temps dans les pizzerias. J'aime la napolitaine aux anchois et la grappa. Le coup du filet c'est un peu comme le coup du barbecul. Avec un L au lieu d'un E à la fin. Ces métaphores, jeux de mots, pensées floues sont des tentatives d'adaptation et de mimétisme avec des lieux, des contextes, des régionalismes, puis de restitutions des sentiments et des sensations qu'ils procurent. Restitutions pleines de souplesses elles aussi, en mode méduse. Dans les pizzerias, les filets sont souvent remplis de faux crustacés en plastique. Et d'étoiles de mer, alors que ça ne se mange pas. La casserole du barbecul n'est pas non plus une vraie casserole, hein... et les vêtements accrochés un peu partout ne sont pas non plus de vrais vêtements, mais un genre nouveau de vêtements virtuels...

Le filet, la toile, le web, le network, le réseau, le social, le sexuel, le marchand, etc... Ah oui... il y a aussi « l'internet des objets » dont on parle beaucoup en ce moment. Selon le réseau, ou disons selon une de ses modalités de capitalisation collective de la connaissance, l'internet des objets « représente l'extension d'internet à des choses et des lieux dans le monde physique. » Par exemple, ce sont des objets ou des lieux équipés de puces reliées à des URLs, donc à Internet. Grâce à « L'internet des objets » internet se prolonge au delà du monde électronique, il change de forme, il se ballade, comme la méduse, le jelly fish, le filet, l'artiste. « L'internet des objets -nous dit le réseau- c'est la réalité augmentée ». Ouais. Et les objets sont en relation entre eux.

Je suis intriguée par le fait qu'on aie privilégié le concept d'objet pour parler de « L'internet des objets » alors que ce concept recouvre aussi celui du lieu et qu'on aurait pu choisir d'appeler ça « L'internet des lieux » ou « L'internet des lieux et des objets ». En art, lorsqu'il s'est agi de nommer, on a plutôt opté pour l'accentuation inverse, sur le lieu : In Situ, Context Kunst, Land Art... alors que les termes Nouveaux Réalistes, Ready Made, Pop Art évacuent le mot « objet ». Il y a bien « Art and Objecthood » de Michael Fried, mais je ne crois pas que ce soit si pertinent ici, quoique... Après tout, c'est vous qui voyez l'exposition. Moi je suis une correspondante lointaine, connectée, mimétique, je fais seulement des prédictions. Je suis autorisée -et même invitée- à faire ces prédictions en vertu de mes relations avec l'artiste. Et ouais, mes relations. J'ai des relations avec l'artiste.

Act V
Scene 5 and a half. I

Inside Birnam wood. Enter MALCOM, SIWARD and YOUNG SIWARD, MACDUFF, MENTEITH, CAITHNESS, ANGUS, LENNOX, ROSS and Soldiers, marching.

MALCOM: As we cross the threshold of the woods Our vengeance hidden by the bark only to emerge again, naked in body and soul, To seal the fate of dread Macbeth. I feel between these quivering trees, as if acclaimed entering a mausoleum.
MACDUFF: I can only hear the pulse of my pounding blood Beating at my temples, And the susurrus of my softly padding feets. As I make my discrete way towards my fate, I sense the world of men no more.
LENNOX: Our armour is of moss and our faces creeping bluebells. We are as the graves on which we tread, Forgotten and abandoned behind the shield of boles.
CAITHNESS: These trees protect us, but keep low your voices – All know that woods don’t talk, nor drink, so what protects us now May else betray us later.
SIWARD: Please, speak on, so I know you ; I’d feel a fool addressing a tree that was just a tree.
MENTEITH: If you no longer decipher me from bushes May the sun that explodes like tears on our swords, be our torch-lit eyes to guide us straight And do not stray.
SIWARD: I can barely breathe! But there sits Banquo, unattended, Slumped against that stump of tree, Corpse on corpse, a dagger sunk into his back.
MACDUFF: This majestic mausoleum cannot be a graveyard If it leaves unburied the ruined remains Of that tyrant’s conscience.
YOUNG SIWARD: That coward will die bawling and squalling and begging like a virgin man.
LENNOX: Do my eyes deceive me? Is it the play of leaves that plays upon my vision?
Look – Banquo decomposes at last! His dust, disquiet, recomposes itself upon the tree. A death mask, a funerary portrait, A sign and signpost, succour and success. He paints himself in nature's life eternal.
MALCOM: His image be our banner. The wind lifts it yonder high To show us our way forward nigh. He has armed our branching grasp And has clarified our plight. Let us put an end to darkness And make a nesting for the light.
ALL: Emerge!

LE SALON INVITES (SIC), FORMCONTENT & 1M3‏

Le Salon, an online forum dedicated to the Brussels art scene which was launched in November 2011, organizes its first project outside the web from September 7 to 9, 2012, during the Brussels Art Days.
In an original location in the center of Brussels, Le Salon invites three other nonprofit initiatives – (SIC) (Brussels), FormContent (London) and 1m3 (Lausanne) – to confront various artistic proposals.
As a discursive and meeting platform, Le Salon also presents lectures, performances and a concert during the closing party on Sunday, September 9, from 7 pm onwards.

Dr. Spin-off pourrait être le personnage d'un film, un agent double. Le "spin-off" - terme tiré du vocabulaire d'un récit de fiction - décrit le passage d'un personnage secondaire qui devient, dans une nouvelle narration, le personnage principal. Le passage d'un élément de second plan au premier plan, d'un univers à l'autre, la réunion de deux types de références qui n'appartiennent pas au même registre, sont traités par Damian Navarro comme des couches successives, sur le modèle du revenant. Par la reconnaissance de différents indices, il s'agit d'entrer dans une narration étrange, dont les personnages seraient des "sculptures parentales", ou "sculptures fantomatiques". La tentative de clonage d'après modèle photographique d'un élément de mobilier, et la greffe d'une antenne de zombie tirée d'un film d'horreur de série B sembleraient être les premières pistes de lecture de Dr. Spin-off.

Damian Navarro est né en 1983, il vit et travaille à Lausanne. Il est membre du Centre d'art Circuit. Son travail a récemment été présenté à Hard Hat à Genève, Galen et New Jerseyy à Bâle, au Kunsthaus Aarau, et au Sculpture Center à New York. Damian Navarro est représenté par Ribordy Contemporary à Genève.
